Why I use WaterLase® for Fillings and Bond Preparation | Cape Town
A Truly Biomimetic & Biological Approach to Dentistry
As a biomimetic biological dentist, my goal is simple: to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while creating long-lasting, healthy restorations.
That’s why I use advanced laser technology such as BIOLASE WaterLase during filling preparation and bonding.
What does “Biomimetic & Biological Dentistry” mean?
Biomimetic means working in harmony with your natural tooth structure
Biological means respecting your body’s tissues, nerves, and healing processes
Rather than aggressively drilling, we aim to support the tooth, not fight it.
Why WaterLase® is Brilliant for Filling Preparation?
1. Preserves more healthy tooth
WaterLase allows us to remove decay precisely and conservatively, leaving strong, healthy enamel and dentine intact. Less removal = a stronger tooth long-term.
2. Gentle on the nerve (less sensitivity)
Traditional drilling generates heat and vibration. WaterLase uses a cool water-powered laser, which is far kinder to the nerve and reduces post-treatment sensitivity.
3. Creates the ideal surface for bonding
The laser cleans and conditions the tooth surface on a microscopic level, allowing the bond to:
Penetrate deeper
Seal better
Last longer
This is critical in biomimetic fillings, where the bond strength protects the tooth from cracks and fractures.
4. Better seal = less chance of recurrent decay
WaterLase removes bacteria within the tooth and prepares a cleaner bonding surface, helping prevent leakage and future decay beneath the filling.
5. Often less need for injections
Many patients find treatment more comfortable, with reduced need for anaesthetic — especially for smaller restorations.
Why this Matters for your Long-term Tooth Health?
A poorly bonded filling can act like a wedge and weaken the tooth over time.
A biomimetic, laser-assisted bond allows the tooth and filling to function together — closer to how nature intended.
This approach helps to:
Reduce cracks and fractures
Prolong the life of your natural tooth
Delay or avoid crowns and root canals where possible
